With Auto DM, a campaign sends its first DMs and follow-ups by itself. When a DM is due, Extrovert writes it in the campaign's Voice and sends it from your LinkedIn account. Nobody reviews it first.
Replies stay with you. So does any DM the AI isn't sure about: it sends nothing and puts the conversation in For Review with the reason.
Where: Campaigns, open a campaign, then the Outreach tab, Direct messages.
Available on: the Extrovert plan and the free trial, like every DM feature.
How Auto DM works
First DM and Follow-ups each have their own mode:
Off - no DMs for this step.
Manual - when a DM is due, it waits in For Review in your DM inbox with a draft. It goes out only when you or your AI Agent send it.
Auto - when a DM is due, Extrovert writes it and sends it for you.
The two steps are independent. You can send first DMs yourself and put follow-ups on Auto, or the other way round.
Auto uses the same timing as Manual: the warm-up, the wait after they accept, the pause before each follow-up, the follow-up limit and the relevant-post speed-up. A DM goes out automatically only once it is due, and only inside the campaign's sending hours. For how that timing works, see when Extrovert recommends a DM.
Each automatic DM is written fresh right before it is sent. If you edited a draft by hand, Auto does not use your text. To send your exact words, send the DM yourself or switch the step to Manual first.
Turn it on
Open the campaign and go to the Outreach tab.
Under Direct messages, set First DM, Follow-ups, or both to Auto.
Check Automatic sending under them: how many automatic DMs a day, and between which hours.
Make sure the campaign is running and your LinkedIn account is connected. Auto sends nothing while the campaign is stopped or LinkedIn is disconnected.
Watch out: Auto also sends DMs that are already due, not only DMs to new connections. If you switch an existing campaign to Auto, the conversations waiting in For Review for that step can start going out the same day, within the daily limit. Go through For Review first, and send, snooze or skip anything you would rather handle yourself.
New and duplicated campaigns
The Warm outreach and Nurture presets start with both First DM and Follow-ups on Auto. If you want to review every DM, switch them to Manual before you start the campaign. Configure manually starts with DMs off.
A duplicated campaign starts with Auto switched off on both steps, so its due DMs wait for you in For Review until you turn Auto back on. It keeps the daily number and the hours.
Campaigns that existed before Auto DM have it off until you turn it on.
Daily limit and sending hours
The Automatic sending line shows while at least one step is on Auto. It reads like this: "Up to 10 automatic DMs a day, from 09:00 to 18:00." Click a number or a time to change it.
Daily number
From 1 to 50 per campaign, 10 by default.
Only automatic DMs count. DMs you send yourself or through your AI Agent don't.
A send that fails still uses up its slot.
A DM the AI holds back for you does not use a slot.
The count restarts at midnight in the campaign owner's timezone. Unused DMs don't carry over to the next day.
Each campaign has its own number. Two campaigns on Auto with 10 each can send up to 20 automatic DMs a day.
The DM limit under Settings → Daily limits covers the DMs you and your AI Agent send. Automatic DMs follow each campaign's own number instead, so set it with your whole account in mind. See the recommended daily limits.
Sending hours
Times are in the campaign owner's timezone. Automatic DMs go out only inside this window and inside the owner's working hours. If you don't narrow the window, working hours decide. On a day with no working hours, nothing goes out automatically.
Inside the window, DMs go out at random moments, spread across the time that is left, with at least 3 minutes between them. The start shifts by up to 30 minutes each day. The question mark next to the line shows roughly how often a DM goes out with your settings.
What still comes to you
Replies
When a prospect replies, the conversation moves to Needs reply, read or unread. Auto never answers replies. Answer them yourself or with your AI Agent.
If the prospect goes quiet after your answer, automatic follow-ups start again, counted from your answer.
DMs the AI isn't sure about
When the AI can't write a message it is confident in, it sends nothing. The conversation goes to For Review with a note that Extrovert didn't send the first DM or follow-up, and one of these reasons:
Final message - an earlier message said it was the last one, or that you wouldn't write again.
Open promise - you promised something, such as a file, an intro or a call back, and the conversation shows no sign it happened.
Call outcome - the next message depends on a call or meeting the AI knows nothing about.
Missing info - an honest message needs a fact that isn't in your Voice, your selling points or the conversation.
Inappropriate context - the timing or the message looks wrong without a person checking it.
Needs input - any other reason, with an explanation.
Read the reason, then write the DM yourself, ask your AI Agent, snooze the conversation or skip the prospect.
Failed sends
If an automatic send fails, the conversation goes to For Review marked Send error. If the connection dropped and Extrovert can't tell whether the DM went out, it is marked Outcome unknown.
Extrovert never retries an automatic send on its own. For Outcome unknown, resync the chat to see whether LinkedIn has the message before you send anything.
See what Auto sent and what comes next
The Auto tab of the DMs page lists the conversations whose next first DM or follow-up is automatic, including the ones that aren't due yet. Each shows the step and when it is planned. Hover over it to see roughly when Extrovert sends it.
DMs that went out automatically are labelled Sent automatically, in the conversation list and in the conversation itself.
To keep one person out of automatic DMs, open the conversation and use Snooze. Pick a date, and when it arrives Extrovert continues the series. Skip forever stops DMs to that prospect in this campaign. Their replies still arrive in Needs reply.
Turn it off
Set the step back to Manual. From then on, each DM that comes due waits for you in For Review. DMs that were already sent stay sent. Set the step to Off to stop that step's DMs altogether.
Stopping the campaign stops automatic DMs too.
Good values to start with
Automatic DMs go out in your name, in private conversations, with nobody reading them first. How good they are depends on your voice.
Fill in the DMs tab of your voice first. DM tone, templates and selling points are what the AI writes from. See how to improve comment and DM draft quality.
Start with one campaign of prospects where a clumsy message would cost you little. Keep Manual for campaigns with customers and live deals.
Keep the daily number at 10 at first. Raise it once a week of automatic DMs reads like something you would have sent yourself.
Leave the window on your working hours, or narrow it to the hours your prospects are on LinkedIn.
Check For Review every day. Held-back DMs and failed sends wait there, and they are often live conversations.
Read what went out during the first week, and fix the voice when a message misses.
Every other setting on the page is explained in Outreach settings: warm up, connection requests, and DMs.
