Extrovert applies the rules you set on each campaign's Outreach page to every conversation in that campaign, and works out when the next DM is due. Conversations that are due land in the Recommended tab of the DMs page.
Open Recommended, review or improve the draft, press Send, and move to the next conversation. You don't need to track dates, set reminders, or decide who to follow up with every day. Nothing is sent without you.
This article explains how the timing works. To change it, see the campaign Outreach settings.
Available on: Business and Pro. DM suggestions are not part of the Light plan.
The three reasons a conversation appears
First outreach
You are connected, Extrovert has synced the conversation, and it is empty. Nobody has written yet.
First outreach waits for two things: the warm-up, if the campaign requires comments first, and the wait you set after the connection is accepted (3 days by default). The conversation shows First outreach due now with the line Connected N days ago.
A follow-up is due
There is already at least one message in the conversation, the prospect has not replied to your last one, and the pause you set for the next step has passed. The conversation shows which step it is, for example Second follow-up due now, with the line Last message N days ago.
The prospect shared a relevant post
A new post gave you a natural reason to write sooner, so the next follow-up became due early. The conversation shows a card naming the post, and View post when the draft was actually written on it.
A relevant post only moves a follow-up forward. It never starts a first outreach and never adds an extra message beyond your limit.
How the timing ladder works
Each campaign has its own ladder of pauses. Every pause is counted from the last message in the conversation, and each step can be longer than the one before it, so you chase less as the conversation goes cold.
The default ladder is:
First follow-up: 3 days after the last message
Second follow-up: 7 days after the last message
Third follow-up: 14 days after the last message
Fourth and fifth follow-up: 30 days each
Later follow-ups: 30 days apart, if the campaign has no follow-up limit
You can change every number. A step can never be shorter than the step before it, so raising one step raises the later ones with it.
What counts as one follow-up
Extrovert counts attempts, not messages. If you send five short messages in a row because that is how you write, that is still one follow-up.
Messages you send within 10 hours of each other are grouped into one follow-up. A gap of more than 10 hours starts a new one. The next pause is counted from the last message of the group, not the first.
Messages you send yourself on LinkedIn count exactly the same as messages you send from Extrovert. Drafts you never sent do not count at all.
The follow-up limit
Each campaign sets how many follow-ups one unanswered run may produce, from 1 to 5, or No limit.
When the limit is reached, the conversation shows Follow-up limit reached and Resumes when [name] replies. Extrovert stops recommending DMs there. You can still write to the prospect yourself, and comments carry on as usual.
The conversation panel shows where you are in the run: None sent yet, or 2 of 3 sent without reply.
When the prospect replies
A reply ends the current run and resets the count. The limit starts from zero again.
While their message is unread it sits in the Unread tab and nowhere else. Extrovert does not recommend writing over a message you have not read.
Once you have read it, the clock starts from their message. If the conversation goes quiet again, it comes back to Recommended as the first follow-up of a new run. Anything you send after their reply counts as a follow-up in that new run.
This is why a prospect who said "yes, let's book something" and then went silent still comes back to you. You do not have to remember them.
Old and imported conversations
Timing is measured from the last message, whoever wrote it. If the last message in a conversation is months or years old, the pause has long since passed and the conversation is due straight away.
That applies to conversations you never started too. If you add someone you have an old thread with as a prospect, Extrovert syncs the history and can recommend picking it back up. See how to get your existing conversations into Extrovert.
How a relevant post speeds things up
If the campaign has Follow up sooner after a relevant post turned on, a new post from the prospect can halve the current pause. A 14-day wait becomes 7, a 7-day wait becomes 4, a 30-day wait becomes 15.
Not every post counts. Extrovert looks for a concrete, recent event you could mention naturally: a new role, a launch, funding, an award, a conference, a finished project, company news. General advice posts, opinions, motivational posts and sales pitches do not qualify, because there is nothing specific to reference.
A relevant post never overrides anything else. It does not skip the follow-up limit, it does not pull a skipped conversation back early, and it does not push past an unread reply.
The reason a conversation surfaced and the post the draft was written on are two different things. The AI may use that post, a different recent post, or none at all. View post appears only when the draft really was written on a specific post.
Reading the Follow-ups panel
Open any conversation on the DMs page and look at the Follow-ups section on the right. It tells you exactly where the conversation stands.
You will see one of these:
First outreach due now or [Step] due now, with the date it is counted from
Next follow-up in N days, when nothing is due yet
Follow-up limit reached, with Resumes when [name] replies
Follow-up recommendations are off for this campaign
Under it, where they apply:
Next one N days after that, so you can see the whole shape of the sequence
Or N days after that if [name] shares a relevant post
After this one, recommendations pause until [name] replies, when you are on the last step of the run
The dots and count: None sent yet or 2 of 3 sent without reply
Manage DM cadence at the bottom of the section opens that campaign's Outreach settings on the Direct messages part.
Why a conversation is not in Recommended
Work down this list. It is almost always one of these.
It is not due yet. Open the conversation and read the Follow-ups panel. It will say how many days are left.
They wrote last and you have not read it. Check the Unread tab.
The follow-up limit is used up. The panel says Follow-up limit reached. Raise the limit, or write to them yourself.
You skipped the conversation. Skipping for a number of days hides it until that date. Skip forever stops recommendations for that prospect entirely.
Direct messages or Follow-ups are off for the campaign. Check the campaign's Outreach page.
You are not connected. DMs are only suggested for prospects you are connected with.
The warm-up is not finished. This only blocks the very first DM. A conversation that already has messages in it is never held back by the warm-up.
The campaign is paused, or the prospect is no longer in it.
If the draft quality is the problem rather than the timing, that is set by the campaign's voice. See how to improve comment and DM draft quality.
